Lois VanLiew discovered silk painting through workshops led by artist Diane Lawrence and quickly embraced the medium's unique combination of spontaneity and control. Working on stretched silk, she used vibrant dyes, gutta resist, salt techniques, and other specialized methods to create luminous images rich with color and movement.

Her silk paintings range from florals and birds to abstract and imaginative compositions. The flowing nature of the dyes often produced unexpected patterns and textures, making each piece a unique collaboration between artist and medium.
